Matt Pat if you ever want to try an awsome tcg. Try Hex Shards of Fate. Its sadly fallen on hard time but the creators are working to revive it. It has fun mecanics and you will love the Pve elements. I and other community members can help you get started. I would give you some card packs and also a pick of any card i have more than 4 of. Let me know if you get interested.

With the right tell, you will know when to claim re-mulligan, throw a tantrum and run out the door.

These things may work at lower and casual levels of play but a word of advice to all the new players watching this: there are more than 3 styles of play and most good decks can play on multiple axises. Additionally tells are normally not as simple as telling stress. A confident player will be confident in error and a nervous player will be correct but be worried about a missread. When you get to higher levels of play you'll start to see different kinds of ticks. Some of these are made to hide information, like flipping and shuffling their hand so they dont focus on any specific card for too long and give away information. Others will be physical manifestations of the mental process. Matpat worked too hard to separate magic from chess here but good players have a generally good idea of what the opponent's deck contains after a turn or 2. So from there its judging the likelihood of what's in their hand and finding lines of play that lead to the highest probability of winning. If I play this do they respond? What kinds of responses could they have? What is the best play that they could make given their deck? Do I have any options if they make that plan? How likely is it for them to have that optimal response? What have they played already and how many cards they have in hand is also important to judge the likelihood of them having certain cards.

As an example: When I play I shuffle my cards in hand regularly to remind myself of my options. When I'm thinking I set the cards facedown in front of me so there is zero information I can give. Then mentally I start mapping lines of play to decide my best move. I do a like finger that sort of says "this then this then this" or something similar. Of course I'm still watching how my opponent handles his cards and how he or she responds to my plays. When I pass the turn after an intense line of thinking I leave my cards facedown and watch my opponent on their turn while leaning on my thumbs covering my mouth with my forefingers.

Magic is hard lol but you donr have to get that competitive about it. But if you want to get better, matpat included, try reading this to start: https://boardgamegeek.com/thread/370207/what-i-know-about-magic-gathering and it will give you a lot more than here to build on for how to evaluate decks and then just play a lot and learn from the people that are winning a lot

This is rather oddly timed for me. As I saw this video for the first time in my subscriptions feed, I was watching a Magic: the Gathering video on another device while shuffling a new deck of cards. What prescient nonsense is this?

okay i get the concept but like dude. if you’re playing at any sort of competitive level with cards that can be utilized in a variety of ways, understanding the nuances of what can be done and the play patterns that can occur are far more important than trying to read your opponent. take for example an opponent that plays a Wicked Wolf targeting your Brineborn Cutthroat, in this situation you didn’t have an answer until you saw their move, now any cards you can play right now have turned into a way to pump up your creature and save it, and it’s about determining whether bouncing the Wolf back to their hand is better than trying to outrace how fast they can pump it with its own ability and beating the Wolf in combat. That play pattern and the outcomes and decisions you can make are uncertain and you can’t read what your opponent has to know whether they have an answer when the main answer they have is based on what you’re about to do.

Magic is more of a game of how you intend to react to your opponents moves and the choices you can make to outsmart that than it is trying to read your opponent. Knowing your opponent has a counterspell due to a turn one thoughtseize doesn’t help when you have nothing except threats to play. Information is important in the neutral but when you start to factor in your opponent trying to assess your threats it becomes way more complex. What i’m trying to say is that Magic is much more complicated than how it’s being portrayed and i feel this episode could have focused more on what kinds of cards are better to determine better success. Things like playing ramp to thin your deck which increases your probability of drawing gas cards, how many copies of your wincons you should play and how much deck thinning you should have, how many cards you should run in your deck and what percentages are optimal. That topic is more universal and invites more math and research to be done and actually holds more information that will help players. This video as it stands is just lumped im with a lot of other videos about magic, when it could have been shifted to be so much more. I’m dissapointed not because the episode is abhorrently bad but because the direction and the goal could have been so much better with very little change.

magic the gathering has a lot more to strategy in lowering probabilities while producing productive outcomes than you went over. A few examples would be "how many colors to use," use too many and you might have lands on the table without cards you can draw with them, how many lands are in your deck, too few and you skunk your entire game but too many and you end up pulling multiple lands from your deck in a row when you could be pulling useful cards for battle, as well as putting cards in the deck that allow you to either plan ahead or pull cards from the middle of the deck instead of only the top... I think I found out why you're losing x.x; MTG is a lot about maximizing the number of good starting outcomes and minimizing the number of bad ones, another reason why people try to limit themselves to between 60-65 cards, even when they can pull out a pile of over 100; the least number of cards is the max probability to pull out useful hands.
