Lmao, sure because the dealership is the only one that scams people. in the history of Mechanics they have never scammed a guest nor has buying a car off of a private sale. Nope never.... Scottie come on man, you have to stop using one circumstance as a means to bash something. because lets face it, the bad apple theory applies to everything.

You take chances on ANY preowned car you buy. Even some brand new vehicles have issues within the first few hundred miles. They're all made by man and machine and none of those are perfect. What matters is that the vehicle still has an active warranty.

How should I arrange to have my mechanic inspect a used car before buying it? Should a dealer let me drive it off the lot to do this? Or, should a salesman drive with me? Is it good enough to have my mechanic come to the lot and inspect it without a lift? Should the dealer provide the lift and time to do this inspection?

Every used car was checked out and only those that were superior would get the 'Certified' label and would come with a Honda warranty. I bought a 2001 cr-v that was Honda certified in '04 and it now 15 yrs later has 129k without any major problems.

Then ask more money for it & the added warranty period is a generally a joke.

I bought one from a dealership...
But my family use to own a Saturn dealership and therefore we still have connections and know the guy who owns the dealerships next to where we had ours. I paid $5,000 for a 56,000 miles Toyota Matrix with one owner and consistent records.
No one is buying manuals or small cars anymore so it’s been sitting there. And the price was listed at $9,000 so the only time you wanna buy at a dealer is if you got connections. Because they also financed me and what they did is they lowered the actual retail price even further to make the interest plus cost of car to come out to $5,000.
Saturn was a good company: they gave us several cars free. Then in 2004 for some reason when GM took a stronger hold on them they stopped doing that, and they made working for them crappy.
