the story/version everyone i know grew up with was a poor young woman widely regarded as the most beautiful in her city had a rich man fall in love with her. they married and had two kids, a boy and a girl, eventually as she grew older the man fell out of love with her and started spending less and less time with her. it got to a point where he only came back to visit their children and soon he took another, younger wife. in jealousy and rage, she placed her children in sacks and threw them off the bridge and into the river. as soon as they hit the river, she started crying and ran down the river bank, trying to save them, but it was too late, she couldn't find them. as she was running along the river, she slipped and fell, cracking her head open on the rocks and dying. at night, near water, you can hear her weeping and crying out for her children "ay, mis hijos, mis bebes! salvame, salvame!" she'll stop when she sees children and she'll come check them out, but when she discovers they're not hers, she kills them out of rage, and returns to crying along the riverbanks.

okay, but the real la llorona is terrifying. especially growing up when you're by the rivers and you hear what sounds like someone crying outside.

If you follow these cries you will see the banshee washing your blood soaked clothes in the water. It’s terrifying to children in Ireland and I have to say it stopped me from sneaking out at night.
