I’ve liked Stephen for many years and will continue to do so, but his reasoning for being religious is remarkably bad.

@robrcx I am agreeing with parts of what your saying there yet your still being argumentative. I certainly never said anyone ever needs their feeling sheltered lol. It's not walking on egg shells to say that some critiques people make on religion just don't translate in actual discussion or reflection of views.

Scott Derail Any person who believes has their own reasons. Whether those reasons are philosophical arguments or personal testimony or even just that they “feel” it’s true, they are all subject to criticism.
It’s not a straw man to call the stories of religions fairytales. By fairytales I mean bullshit stories which is exactly what they are. Some have kernels of truth to them, but those kernels are surrounded by the fiction of magic and mysticism.
And who are you to say what the right arguments are? People change their minds for different reasons. Some people need to have it presented to them in a “walking on eggshells” fashion, others react to bluntness and ridicule. If I say Christianity is based on bullshit fairytales, that might be the first time someone has heard that. And while it might upset them at first, perhaps later on they start to think about how there really are many similarities between the stories of their holy book and the stories they read as children. This is why multiple approaches are needed. You need both the firebrands and the non-firebrands, because they both are effective.
I can tell you from personal experience that not everyone needs to have their feelings sheltered in order to realize they are wrong.

@robrcx Agreed. But the question posed to him was about what his own reasoning not what you or I can do. Furthermore it's a straw man fallacy to compare this to fairy tales. It just turns religious people off from listening. The overall decline in religion shows that the right arguments can change people's minds.

Even though I'm not a Catholic, I'm glad that we have Christian representatives like Stephen Colbert on popular television who can discuss faith and evidence intelligently. Not all Christians are the mindless stereotype people think about. There is a middle ground.

While I agree that Christianity, does not wholly rely on the same TYPE of evidence that the physical sciences provide, it does need evidence to be considered a rational belief. And you shouldn't be afraid of that; scripture never preaches blind faith! After all, if we believe Christ created EVERYTHING, then there SHOULD be evidence! While you can't examine God (metaphysical) under a microscope (physical instrument), you can make philosophical claims based off of scientific discovery. Remember, the natural sciences ARE NOT the only academic disciplines! Study the history, look at the archeology, examine the philosophy, and make sure its claims don't conflict with scientific discovery. But above all Christianity is about relationship. If you really care about knowing, ask Him to have relationship with you.
Stephen, you are 100% correct in you're Roman 1:20 understanding: we can see God's through His mark on His creation. However, don't stop there! God wants us to worship Him with our hearts, souls, and MINDS! I'm praying for you, brother!

Stephen may go to Mass, but he is on the liberal wing of that church. People like Michael Voris, the ultra-right wing Catholics hate Stephen Colbert because of this (and others).

I beg you my fellow Americans please read this article. "Beyond Reason: Mental Retardation: An Overview." It's Trump! It explains why he does everything he does. Many retarded people look normal. I didn't know that. Did you? And many try to hide that they are retarded like Trump. And many don't have morals because they don't understand what morals are. It's why Trump cheats on his wives like he's doing now. And I think it's with that older intern who tried to take the microphone from Acosta when Sarah quit taking the daily press briefing. Remember? And if you watch it you see when Acosta is talking to Trump, Trump puts his head down (like a little boy who doesn't know what to answer) and that woman jumped up and went over to Acosta and tried to take the mic. And then you can tell it hit her that she shouldn't have done that and she put her hand over her mouth and stared at Trump. His wife had left the White House. So I'd bet that woman took her place in Trump's bed and that she's the one who writes his tweets. He simply can't write them himself. And it's why he can't use a computer. It's too complicated for him! It's the reason when he was first in office that he couldn't believe that he could call any leader of any country he wanted to and they'd have to talk to him. It's also why he doesn't understand that on the other side of the world people are sleeping when he's awake so he'd wake up people and not care at all. And then he'd ask them what the population of their country was! They were stunned that the President of the United States asked them about their country like that. It's because he can't read very many words and never reads books or documents. And Putin told him in Vietnam (the draft dodger was in Viet Cong country on OUR sacred Veteran's Day. His first one. That's Putin laughing and spitting on the 68,806 American military who were killed in Vietnam doing their duty when Trump refused and cheated saying he had bone spurs. His Father did that. Got a tenant of his who was a Doctor to lie and say Donald had bone spurs) to pretend to read documents and to give his 82 year old ex-KGB boss the job of security for OUR embassy in Moscow!!! At 1.2 million dollars and to my knowledge that old man and his son are still guarding the bugged American Embassy. Trump gave a Communist and a vicious criminal the job of guarding an American Embassy! To me that not only an abuse of his office but it's treason. Giving an enemy the job of security? An 85 years old man getting tax payers money like that? What would you call it? Look it up. Rex Tillerson did that on Trump's orders unless it changed. I know that our Senator Daines and other male Senators went there at Trump's request. Probably to get more orders from Putin! And he's so simple that he actually believes Putin is his friend. :( A psychopath whose murdered at least eight Russian journalists and that was two and a half years ago. Putin has muzzled Russia like Kim Jong un and his family has done for decades. This article explains everything. Songs
