the problem in america is people that think that america is the best in the world, and by extention the best it can be. If you think like that you can't see the full picture, and you can't see how to improve your country.

Neil Degrasse-Tyson was right. Americans dont care about problems. They care about spectacle. Theres tons of gun murders in major cities every year, but residents are so used to it they dont even worry.
BUT, when mass shootings dominate the news then all of a suddent people give a shit about perceived gun shots and run like bunny rabbits from motorbikes backfiring.

Gun control Will never benefit the sane, law-abiding public. People that shoot civilians do so out of malice, desperation, poor education, and mental illness. The liberal public will never be able to prevent a mass shooting because in doing so, you cross all of the lines that prevent the creation of a police state, I.e. facial recognition, racial and sexual profiling and so on. You also infringe upon the rights of others to defend themselves from a dangerous unpredictable world. If Western society wishes to end the deluge of mass shootings then we must give the “least of us” (preferably all) healthcare, excellent free education, a place to call home, a respectable route to retirement and dodgeball back in our schools so that our children can understand the pain of consequences. I would gladly double my own tax rate to make all of that happen for America. If you don’t have the stomach to solve the problem of violence correctly then by all means, continue to try and pass laws with emotion, ignorance and the noises that victims make. Trump is an ignorant, cheap dime store hood. But it’s the liberals that put him in the White House. No fate but what we make.

Ok I'm just going to say this, I am 100% for the second amendment. I believe that sane, healthy, contributing members of society, should be eligible to exercise their second amendment right, after a mental health evaluation. I believe that everyone has the right to seek out and utilize their second amendment, after it is deemed they are not a risk to themselves or others.

Types of guns and ammunition are not the problem, the problem is that there is a serious foundation of mistrust on either side of the equation. Someone needs to make a move in the right direction. Someone needs to say "ok, I don't understand why you want to stand on your back porch and mow down tiny trees, however since you are doing no harm to yourself and others and you are mentally capable of understand the implications of owning such a weapon, you know what there are bigger fish to fry." Understanding that and creating a place of open communication is going to be difficult but also is completely possible.

Your tree example cracked me up. Just hope they have a blade protector..

We have indeed forgotten one of the very ideas, allowing us to evolve into the great country we are today compromise.
While I also am a supporter of the 2nd Amendment.
Support addressing who is allowed a gun. It may be a right, but also a responsibility that shouldn't be taken lightly.

To start I never understood why the class taken for a CHL, required for first time purchase of a firearm. Teaching proper handling, safety, etc.
I know in the big picture the impact would be minimal. As a less controversial aspect seemed like a reasonable place to start this conversation.

You're completely right about a first step needing to be made. Hope more people see this! May not be the easy route, but is the necessary one!

I can see banning assault rifles (regular hunting rifles and pistols not so much) and making a law that requires a mental health screening before a purchase of a legal firearm, and that gunshows have to run background checks on people purchasing firearms. You can't ban them all though. Many have protected women and their child from crazed maniacs trying to break in and do harm. Plus, how many strict gun laws are in Chicago and people are still getting shot and murdered daily. It really stopped the gang shootings and murders... NOT (They get them usually illegal anyways stratched off serial numbers). Basically, you are a sitting duck until the cops show up 40 min. later in a bad neighborhood.

There were armed people at the Las Vegas shooting, at pulse, at sandy hook, and at El Paso. You know what they did? They ran or hid. Because having a gun doesn’t magically make you Rambo. Shooting back in mass shooter situations often makes thing worse. Look up Joseph Wilcox. More unarmed people have stopped mass shooters than armed people.

It's sad how numb everyone has become about this issue. Even one life is too much to lose to this senseless violence. My life is very precious to me and I hurt so much when I think about innocent people suddenly thrown on a battlefield. Even if you have teachers carrying guns or law personnel patrolling everywhere there is still a very high chance that there will be casualties. Even in the wild west where many people were armed there were still many murders ... and this was when a response to violence took days. If you can't see how misguided the system that allows a teenager to buy a gun when he/she is too young to drive or drink is then you're just too far gone from reality.

I had a similar situation the other day (though it's partially due to my hormonal teenage anxiety).
After a lockdown drill during school, I heard a loud banging noise following by some loud talking (which in my head sounded like screams)`. My mind automatically went to shooting. I froze. The only reason I didn't react was that no one in my class seemed to notice it and my teacher was still talking. I thought I was going crazy. Even worse, the PA system in my classroom is broke so we don't hear the intercom. Meaning, if there WAS a shooter on campus we wouldn't know about it unless we heard gunshots (they should REALLY fix that).
Of course, later I learned that everything was fine. Still though, I think that everyone across America is being affected and Trevor's right.
Another personal example, the day after Parkland the fire alarm went off in my school. Most people refused to leave the classroom.
Last year we got a shooting threat, and on the day of the threat 2/3 of the school stayed home. I was one of the people who went and even though the school said they cleared it as not a real threat and they had extra security, it was still terrifying. My school is really big and really loud, so to see it so quiet and empty was shocking.
Anyways, I can only imagine the panic in Times Square of all places. And if Congress continues to do NOTHING to make things better, I'm afraid our paranoia may only get worse.
