Minis are pure garbage. We replaced the engine and turbo in my sister's 2008 with less than 60,000 miles on it. Two years later the gear on the cam slipped since it doesn't have a woodruff key. The valves hit the pistons. Now it's a very expensive lawn ornament. The valves were starting to get carbon buildup on it because it's direct injected. She also spent $800 to service the transmission because it was starting to have problems and it didn't fix the issue. You can't get parts or repairs done at a BMW dealer, you have to go to a Mini Cooper dealer 3 hours away. It has the trifecta turbo, direct injection and a CVT. I refuse to buy a vehicle with any of those three things.

The BMW Mini is NOT a British Made Car !
    1) BMW is German.
    2) the Components are Very CHEAP & Nasty, Shoddy Badly Made in Various 3rd World Countries i.e: East Europe, South America, Asia etc = NASTY !
    3) the Mini is Only ASSEMBLED in the UK (Thrown Together FAST)
the Majority of the staff are on Agency Gig Contracts. They can be " let go " at a minutes notice.
East Europeans: Polish, Romanians & Bulgarians, Russian + just a few British Workers, Who Gerneraly Do NOT want to Work at (Stalag BMW) the Mini Plant.
    ENJOY !

Your looking at the mini with the Peugeot engine... The original R53 with the Chrysler engine was an awesome car. I have one that's 17 years old with 120k on it and it's still going strong...

Not disagreeing on the design being a PITA to service... but here is why it was done that way: On European models of the Prince Engine (due to EU requirements for emissions and what not) the friction wheel has an electronic servo and it is computer controlled. When the Prince engine starts the friction wheel is kept disengaged so that the water pump isn't turning to bring the engine temperature up faster so closed loop operation (using the o2 sensors) can occur quicker. Once the programmed temperature is achieved the friction wheel is brought up engaging the water pump pulley. US requirements are not so stringent so in US models the friction wheel is engaged all the time. BMW wasn't going to redesign the Peugeot Prince accessory drive design due to cost just for US models so the only difference is US friction wheels do not have a servo and the plug to the computer. Now while there is a debate to be had on why BMW would use a french engine in the MINI, the main reason was gas mileage which improved over the previous Tritec motor by 4-8 MPG, and BMW was still developing their own engine for the MINI which didn't come out until 2014.

Keep up the good work Scotty.

I love my 2007 MINI CooperS. Twelve years old. Starts everyday. Get's 30MPG. Aftermarket parts are easy to find, and reasonably priced. BLAST to drive. I maintain it properly, keep it washed and waxed, and park it in the garage when I am at home. It looks like a new car. And, did I mention it is a BLAST to drive? Yeah, it's bit quirky, but at least it isn't boring.

BTW, my 2007 MINI has a 1.6 litre turbocharged engine that produces 172 HP -- that's 107 HP per liter. How many other cars produce that kind of power from that kind of size.

Welcome to Peugeot. That's how they used to be. Also new vehicles nowadays aren't meant to be worked on by people that aren't trained to work on them. Way to be helpful and specific in the model year you're trashing. Yes BMW, germans, owned MINI at the time of production. However Peugeot (a FRENCH manufacturer) actually made the one you're "working on".

Hope somebody is watching this from BMW.
Some stuff is PSA (Peugeot/Citroen), most BMW on Prince engines. You take two companies that make unreliable engines; you get MINI disaster.

Scotty's wrong about 6 cyl Mercedes. But he's super right about the Mini. Had a new one, (S), which took synthetic oil I changed every 6000 miles. Engine blew in less than 18,000 miles! Still in a lawsuit with BMW. (4 years later) Besides being a bad car, BMW does not honor their warranties. KEEP AWAY!!!

I just got a 2016 3rd Gen F56 Sport. Traded in my 2014 Toyota Corolla, as I lost all respect for the Dealers and company for trying to blame engine misfires on 91 High Octane. I am more than certain the issue was a cause to their most recent recall on the software that needed to be updated. The dealer did not want to admit that, price gouged me for diagnosing a problem they didn't fix, and said the car should be fine, after performing the software update as part of the campaign and realizing they didn't even replace the fuel in my vehicle, it drove perfectly fine. Additionally on that same visit they wanted to price gouge me with an additional $800 of ridiculous work that could be done for less at a certified technicians shop. Simply shady, I will never own a Toyota for that same reason, as Toyota brushed off my complaint.

After two years of driving a '97 Toyota Corolla that I bought for my 50 minute commute for $150, I decided to buy something that was still good on gas, but more fun! Foolishly, I bought a 2002 Mini Cooper S. It was instantly the fastest car I had ever owned, and I had owned several older sports cars.
BUT it was actually retarded to work on! Worse in some ways than the newer ones, since you can't even adjust the hradlights unless you have a roof overhead, since the headlights were on the hood! They passed a law to get rid of that idiocy! I needed to buy several specialized tools to do basic maintenance on it, and the ABS/TC system NEVER WORKED because the ABS pump was over $1100, and it was serialized to the VIN, and that meant a dealership had to program it!
Which was BAD, because although there was a BMW dealership 5 minutes from my workplace, they refused to work on Mini products, even though my generation was actually the BMW plant!
The nearest dealership was over an hour drive from my house in the opposite direction from work, and they were so backed up with repairs they said it would take TWO MONTHS to get an appointment to get my ABS system fixed!
ALSO, everything that was plastic was cheaply built, easily broken, and EXPENSIVE to replace, even though I do my own work! The interior was garbage, and the vanity mirrors fell out when I flipped down the visors to put up a sunshade, which is essential in FL.
I raced a girl in another Mini Cooper S, and I smoked her; I got up to 140mph thanks to a few go-fast parts from Alta Engineering, who do great work. HOWEVER, my factory front lip spoiler FOLDED under the front tires when I reached those speeds, and I literally had to stop and pull it off! A terrible car that rode like a shopping cart, and was fast enough to get me in alot of trouble, and its horribly hard suspension sent me airborne if I came out of a driveway too fast! Traded it in for a Scion iM, which is the most reliable car I have ever owned. Hopefully we'll get over the 237k miles we got on the old $150 Corolla which we sold! Everything still worked on that old beast, but she was ugly!
