Joker Director Finally Explains That Last Crucial Scene

  • Published: 09 October 2019
  • Arthur Fleck's biggest joke just might be the one he pulled on you. Joker director Todd Phillips recently made a few very interesting comments to the Los Angeles Times about the final scene of the movie comments that imply a bizarre truth about the story being presented. In case that's not warning enough, be advised that major spoilers for Joker lie ahead.

Joaquin Phoenix's Arthur is depicted early and often as having a tenuous grip on reality. The film eventually lets on that it's not always clear which events are fantasy and which are reality not to the audience, and presumably not to Arthur.

At the end, Arthur is seen with his psychiatrist in Arkham State Hospital after he has apparently killed his mother, incited a riot, shot Murray Franklin on live television, and escaped from police custody with the help of his clown-masked followers. As the shrink attempts to question him, Arthur simply laughs, telling her that she wouldn't get the joke. According to Phillips, it's this particular laugh that might hold a clue about the true nature of the story that just unfolded. He explained,

"That laugh in that scene is really the only time he laughs genuinely. There are different laughs in the movie. There is the laugh from Arthur's affliction and then there is his fake laugh when he's trying to be 'one of the people,' which is my favorite laugh. But at the end, when he's in the room at Arkham State Hospital, that's his only genuine laugh in the movie."

Why is that, exactly? Well, perhaps because in the end, the joke is on us, the audience. Phillips has said that one of the main influences on his film was The Killing Joke, the acclaimed 1988 graphic novel in which the Joker says that if he must have a past, he, quote, "[prefers] it to be multiple choice." The director made a direct allusion to this dialogue in suggesting that as many fans have speculated Arthur Fleck might not necessarily be who we think he is. Phillips said,

"There are lots of ways you could look at this movie. You could look at it and go, 'This is just one of his multiple-choice stories. None of it happened.' I don't want to say what it is. But a lot of people I've shown it to have said, 'Oh, I get it he's just made up a story. The whole movie is the joke. It's this thing this guy in Arkham Asylum concocted. He might not even be the Joker.'"

Phillips went on to state outright that the man who will become Batman's nemesis may simply be in the background somewhere, watching all of these events play out. He said,

"Maybe Joaquin's character inspired the Joker. You don't really know. His last line in the movie is, 'You wouldn't get it.' There's a lot going on in there that's interesting."

Phoenix himself also explained that Joker can be seen not so much as a straightforward narrative, but as a series of suggestions. Keep watching the video to see that the Joker director finally explains that last crucial scene!

In America, the liberal left is primed and ready to follow a madman who will orchestrate anarchy on a mass scale. This has been repeated in history many times over. The end result being total oligarchy.
The last scene is metaphorical of this situation.

I don’t know why I simply hate someone’s attempts to interpret movie in one way or another, explain it and then put it in a “box” with label on it, I prefer it to be multiple interpretations including my favorite.

Thanks everyone who worked on that masterpiece. Thank you!

Why can’t this just be a true stand-alone movie? I hate all of these sequels and following the marvel bandwagon of a connected universe. I’m perfectly happy with Arthur’s story stopping and ending here. It would ruin it for me if they somehow tried to have him “influence” a new joker.

The joker may have been telling the story to the psychiatrist at the hospital and being an unreliable narrator it could be difficult to say what is true or not. However at the same time it doesn’t mean all the events of the film are untrue. It may explains the playing up for sympathy we get throughout much of it, the way it presents the idea that the harsh way society treated him that caused his reaction. That could be the joke that is on us. Although the psychopathic nature of his actions are always too much for him to really get our sympathy.

                  What if,
Athur Fleck is just a mentally ill guy who was inspired by a story from his cellmate, who’s name was the joker.
That’s why he imagined himself in the Murray show in the first place, and how he had a relationship.
If you look closely, how did he ended up touching bruse wayne in the Wayne palace? Where were the guards?
How come on earth a late show host mock someguy doing other stand up show, that’s a career suicide.
Too many questions regarding how easy things changed for him in so little time.

IF Phillips says that Arthur is not the Joker and that his story (whether it’s real or not) had inspired another inmate at Arkham Asylum to become the ‘Joker’ which we might see in a future movie i will be so annoyed or if it’s a cliche ‘it was all just a dream’ movie.

i believe if Phillips wants to make a sequel that he would want to keep Phoenix as his joker, as they would have to cast and go through auditions to find another person to play the joker which would be such a waste of time. so hopefully Phoenix did or will become the joker and either the ending of the JOKER was set up for Arthur to now become who he wants to be (joker) OR the events of the movie did happen and Arthur is already the JOKER waiting for his escape from Arkham Asylum.

It being made up just makes the movie completely pointless. It didn't happen, So we can't learn from it.
The point of the movie was to learn what happens when a mentally ill person is treated very poorly in a city filled with chaos and poverty.
Now thanks to the ending, we can't learn anything. Because it was all arthur's imagination.

I don't get the low Rotten Tomatoes critic's review (68%). I watched the first weekend it came out. It has been a long time since I heard cheers/clapping right when the movie finished. It was quite a moment. The best scene of the movie is the "bloody smile" he pulled after waking up from a car crash. He finally felt "belonged" to the group of clown followers. It was the moment we realize Joker is born. And the ending is so good...

I think there is a turning point, the joke is in us and what is our perception of the facts, each subjectivity, that is, each of us can establish a different variant that justifies and adjusts to the events. Everyone who sees this movie ends up asking at some point: "What is real?"

It doesn't make sense. I think he fantasized the relationship, the first talk show appearance, the 'success' of his stand-up routine and maybe the adulation ftom the crowd. The rest was real imo.

He just laughs like that at Murray's show after killing him, at the police car, at the cops killing, and at the stair dancing.. basically after he becomes Joker, after killing Randall.. Could this mean that he was arrested after killing him? maybe he made up the "icon" or "narcissistic" part of the character as he talked with his therapyst.. God damn Todd Philips screwed me up
