The vast majority of medical research is now done by for-profit corporations that seek formulas that they can patent and convert into maximum revenue. It's not at all in their interest to cure problems in their customers. They much prefer to offer things that make you feel some relief with an acceptable amount of side effects especially if they may subsequently offer another treatment to mitigate the side effects.

Imagine if university labs were still mostly publicly funded for the betterment of humanity instead of for production of revenue generating patent medicines. Just the tendency towards working in secret and never sharing results with colleagues because of intellectual property rights owned by private sponsors is a detriment to better progress.

@puirYorick I'm gonna read this later on bit busy. But based on what I've skimmed so far, I realized I really haven't thought of poaching. A fresh perspective.

                                                        • puirYorick
                                                          puirYorick  1 weeks back

@Richard Casterly Your second paragraph IS the problem because it DOES practically stop the public funding of some research by essentially poaching all the best brains from the field of study to work under competitive umbrellas. Also, cash-strapped governments will point to the private enterprise effort as sufficient rather than funding parallel systems any further so that the public good becomes neglected then vanishes entirely.

The small matter of private enterprise being interested in a steady revenue stream but not actually CURING DISEASE or eradication of a problem remains my other big complaint.

Researchers labouring under NDAs for some corporation can scarcely say anything if the directors decide to sabotage a promising cure using Capture & Kill tactics to benefit the financial good of shareholders at the expense of the public good.

I don't express some random conspiracy theory here but something I experienced from within the private enterprise world. The quarterly reports ruled all matters from R&D to the paint colour scheme in the staff cafeteria. Right and Wrong were alien creeds.

I'm not anti-capitalism. Government has no business owning car plants or coal mines or Coca Cola. However, certain things like curing disease and working towards the common public good simply has to have a public backed institution as a safe haven.

Imagine if the CDC was run privately. Imagine if the FAA was under private control... Wait, we know how that turned out. Two crashed airliners with hundreds dead and the top selling aircraft model in history grounded globally with thousands of flights cancelled to date.

                                                        • Richard Casterly
                                                          Richard Casterly  1 weeks back

The good thing about corporations is that it's THEIR money that they're using and people can simply opt not to patronize their end results if they prove insufficient. Should it work, well of course they should have all the bragging rights and the sole ownership of its patent. After all they gambled their own money and a piece of their lifetime working on something that may never yield results. It's just fair trade.

Also corporations doing their own thing does not at all affect the Government's or the common people's interest in public-funded research. The only thing stopping them from ever conducting one is their own interest in the subject at hand and their POV on whether or not it needs more priority than anything else that need funding.

We live for as long as our fate decides and because of the family and friends who have passed we should live and enjoy life and make the world a better place for as long as we are able to. Isn't that a reason? What makes me better than the billions of people who have lived before me?

People in the west sometimes even forget they have a body. Their whole life revolved around their brain. I have been to china where they practice Tai Chi, Qi gong, eat very healthy and have natural medicine. Those elderly are miles ahead of western elders. In this academic society it's easy to think you can solve the problem of your body's health using your brain's intellect, while of course the most effective way to get a healthy body, is to maintain it USING your body.
