This was an amazing breakdown, I had a great grip on the movie but this made me understand it even more although I go think 70% of the movie was in his head, I really hope that it wasn’t all in his head, and that Arkham scene was just him breaking out after the events.

I think all the things happen in joker movie is random because Heath ledger joker says that Nobody panics if everything goes accordingly to the plan..

Girl friend scenes were definitely in his head. They prove that when she refers to him as the man down the hall. Also she asked if he wanted her to call his mom. But if she was truly at the hospital she would know she was ill and can’t be called. Also the scene with him in the crowd on the Murray show was clearly another fantasy. (Its unknown if Arthur truly thought it was real, or if he was just fantasizing.) It’s easy to tell, he’s watching the show in bed, fantasizing about being there. Also later, when he does truly meet Murray face to face, you can tell it’s their first time meeting. (Yes I believe the talk show at the end was real too)

I think the scenes of him taking notes at the comedy club were real. Him laughing at parts that no one else is laughing at shows he has no sense of what part of the joke is actually a joke. Showing he can’t relate to other people. And his brain functions differently than a “neurotypical” person. Him taking notes on basic comedy and the way the person stands and talks shows he has no concept on how to act normal, he is aware that he can’t but desperately wants to. (We see this in many mental illnesses in real life, on a personal note, this scene spoke to me, as it reminded me of my son who has autism)

The scene with him stomping, I really do think he was stomping on garbage. Nothing more than that.

The scenes at the therapist I believe were also real and crucial to the story line. The system is failing to help mentally ill people. The scene where he is told he will no longer get his medications is sort of the “peak.” This is when you start to see Arthur become Joker. And in my opinion, it’s for no reason other than he is now off his meds, and facing hard times. Which makes the illness worse. The joker is a mentally ill man who is off his medications. He has no one to take care of him, as his mother is also mentally ill. And the system failed her as well. Her reaching out through letters to a politician, just getting dismissed as crazy, and offers her and her son no help. (But not genetic obviously as Arthur was adopted and his mental illness may be due to abuse.)

Which leads me to my next theory. He could have a split personality disorder (DID) because they are caused my abuse in children. The joker could have been created in his mind as his protector. And that is why he doesn’t remember the abuse as Arthur. When he is off his medication, his split personality starts to come to the surface. And is able to put the missing pieces together that “Arthur” couldn’t remember. That’s a whole theory I could get into on a separate post if anyone is interested 😂

I agree with the fabrication of the girlfriend and that the comedy show went well. Those were obvious, but I think that’s it. If all the scenes after him not taking meds were fabricated, everything would lose meaning and we would be back at square one: not knowing who the joker is

One more thing, I think we all got it wrong. This movie isn't an origin story, but its a story being told to the lady in Arkham on how he saw everything but similar to the Joker in the Dark Knight, none of his stories are real. What he is doing is telling her a story of the most insane and depraved life that could lead to such a terrible outcome for a person. He adds bullying, awkwardness in a crowd, the rich dumping on anyone they deem below them. He suffers from every single mental disorder know to psychologist at the time, and he is just putting himself in a role with one, schizophrenia. He then kills her and runs away from Arkham. The joke is between him and his real origin that no one knows but him. He doesn't have the laugh when he is talking to her but he is still a murderer. She seems to think of everything he says in the meeting as delusional because everything he is saying is a lie and she knows it, but she has to hear him out. This isn't actually an origin story at all but just a Joker story.

I think the ending joke he is thinking about, is how he's going to make Batman kill him in the end. This being another reference to his early joke about his death being more important than his life.

I feel like there are definitely parts of the movie that are simply just hallucinations, but there’s no way the entire thing was him imagining getting revenge on the people that wronged him, because he wouldn’t have been hurt by several of the people if sections of the movie weren’t real.
Take his mom for example. Unless he really went and talked to Wayne inside Wayne manor AND went to Arkham asylum and looked at the records, he wouldn’t have been mad at her.
Those are just my thoughts, I definitely could be wrong

At some moments I felt so bad for Arthur. All he wanted was to be loved and liked, yet society turns his back on him. That moment where he was accused for stealing that sign: he asked so innocent why he would do that. Or that moment when he thought he made it on tv, he smiled and was so happy. One moment later he was made fun of. My heart really broke on those moments man.. Can we talk about that or am I the only soft person here?

I don't think the joke is that he and bruce will now be related because his parents are dead because of him. I think he realizes he does not have a condition which makes him laugh in situations which aren't funny, but that what he finds funny is what other's find repulsive. That's why he laughs when something horrible happens, that's why his jokes aren't funny to other people, that's why his final joke was to kill Murray and that's why he's laughing at the death of 2 people. When the person asks what the joke was, he says: "You wouldn't get it." because he realizes that nobody but him enjoys these 'jokes'.

This is also the reason why he all of a sudden feels empowered after killing those 3 guys. He doesn't feel like there's something wrong with him, because he accepts that this is just what he enjoys. Another cue that he thinks the wrong things are funny is the fact that he laughs at all the wrong times in the comedy club.

No. No. No. There is no fantasy in this movie. It all happens in real time. There is an international irony. It plays off of Occam's razor (Arkham). The simple answer is actual. He was on Murray's show. Murray forgot him so quickly that when he plays the clip of him in the comedy club he doesn't even recall him in the crowd. It's the notion that people who are sick are shoved to the side. The laugh is a broken laugh. Tragedy and humor. This is a movie about the fact human nature is to forget the weak and broken. The fact that we do need to care for those falling from pain or else we see the weight when they try to fight back on their own. It's a dark movie because it's on the nose. It plays off the old note of the Jester. The guy who would tell a king the worst news with the most humorous. The one guy who could avoid execution because he brought the king laughter. So yeah, everything did happen. Yeah he was fucked in the head. But yeah, he had a reason for everything that he did and was in a mind with intent. This video is way over thought, this movie is exactly as it reads on a currseray glance.

I won't go into a big rant but i'm assuming here this whole theory came forth because when asked "what's so funny ?" In that last scene he replies with "you wouldn't get it" to me that was just the movie's way to show us he doesn't need the general populace's approval or acknowledgment and that he is comfortable enough with himself. Also his laugh caused by his sickness, in the beginning of the movie (props to the actor) you could also hear a sad cry in the laugh but not in that scene, there, his laugh is legit.

I think the interesting point about this film is the proximity of Arthur’s fantasy. It is all real, but the end of the film seems a catastrophic consequence of how identity is formed by a necessarily distant fantasy.

Thomas could've easily fabricated adoption papers since he didn't want to have anything to do with her

More importantly, the murder of Murray GAVE the people the reason to start a complete chaos through Gotham. Suffice to say, if the chaos in the city was real, then the Murray thing HAD to be, as well.

Thats why as he writes “people laugh at jokes with sexual intercourse” u can later see it in his notebook.
