  • Torque converters use a simple idea to solve a complicated problem. This Science Garage goes over how a torque converter keeps your car from stalling, and how it can actually increase the torque coming from your engine.

We also look at the unique system in the Koenigsegg Regera- that uses a transmissionless direct drive torque converter variation to get over 250 MPH!

Bart teaches us how cars work by blowing stuff up and cutting things in half. It’s a science show for the car lover who’s easily bored. Join Bart as he explains the science behind everything automotive. This is cars down to the atom. This is Science Garage.

So when you apply the brakes in an automatic transmission, does the turbine come to a stop because rpm has dropped? And therefore the impeller doesnt have enough fluid force to drive the turbine? Or is something engaging the turbine to make it come to a stop? Really interesting stuff, been watching a couple different videos on this.

Why do Torque converters use transmission fluid instead of oil

                                                      MEGOLITO  1 months back

and when i said 0w-30 oil was used to keep syncros from sticking, i meant that as in if that problem arises. ATF fluid should do the job just fine and they should not stick when using ATF. but if they do apparently this man swears motor oil will do the job better for manual transmissions and has quite a big history of building and fixing cars.

                                                    • MEGOLITO

so transfluid is designed so it does not foam up. when its spinning and pumping though the torque converter fins like you see in the video or in any automatic car, normal engine oil would foam up and lose ability to transfer energy though it. now on the contrary for a MANUAL transmission you can use OW full synthetic motor oil in the transmission and it will work just fine because there is no torque converter to whip it into a foam. infact there is a gentlemen that builds race cars that prefers Ow-30 full syn motor oil in his manual transmissions because its the only thing that keeps the syncros from sticking. he said even redline ATF fluid was not able to do that for a sticky syncro issue.

also normal engine oil has detergent properties to hold carbon particles in suspension, to keep the black carbon deposits off your internals inside the motor. ATF fluid does not have that (atleast none that i have seen or read about) i doubt there is any because you dont have to deal with carbon build up in a transmission

I think it would be insane on those 400cc japanese bikes which.revved till 20,000 rpm
