It's a matter of when we conquer nature. If we are to truly progress, we have to. That also means conquering our own biological bodies which are subject to primeval instincts such as the obsession on carnality that is wreaking havoc what with overpopulation, unwanted kids, abortions, ruined relationships, wasted resources, environmental destruction and unfulfilled potential. Then gluttony- eating up the whole world with the insatiable appetite for meat and animal products. Then we have to enhance ourselves with mind uplifting and machine parts, or fully machine eventually, because these Zerg-like, squishy organic bodies are messy.

The choice has already been made long before to if we change the world around us or let it be, and the answer is to change it, always has been always will be. It I'd nature, just our nature for better and worse.

I think it is a good thing IF there are no negative domino effects. But we will never know before we tried it. So it's a paradoxical question.

This as far as I and many others in the comments can see seems to be a grand idea! However, more testing needs to be done and the final say should go down to those of us who are qualified and knowledgeable in the area; for instance this all sounds good and dandy but there could be repercussions we aren’t thinking about that could lead to a bigger problem. Scientists should be in full control of this and a democratic vote AMONG scientists should ensue before we bring it into political hands. We need to know if it’s safe after all. That being said the implications of this are still a little scary. Soon people will wonder what else we can genetically modify and soon enough we will live in a dystopia because enough people have edited themselves and doomed the world. We have to tread on thin ice at all times and be skeptical and reasonable. All intelligent life is doomed to destroy itself at one point or another, let’s leave this one to the scientists while the rest of us work on cutting down our wastes and providing a better living environment for all. As unfortunate as it sounds the environment is a cause much more for concern than editing genes of mosquitos

Apparently this vid exploded earlier this year. Ended up doing a project on CRISPR 2 years back, but my understanding of the approach to this at the time was to create mosquitoes that couldn't breed. My particular project ended up focusing on trying to remove invasive species entirely by introducing mutations that makes males more attractive and infertile while females remained fertile with gene drive. It seemed relatively sound besides having to change legislation around capture to facilitate spreading it.

One thing I stumbled on while doing research was that it's extremely problematic for a gene drive to fail; it behaves much like surviving an infection, and it becomes extremely difficult to spread the drive to that organism or even its offspring. On the other hand, changing multiple genes for the purpose of driving one trait (I think the term was multiplexing) lets the success rate go much higher, to the tune of a 13-14-fold version could reasonably spread through the entirety of Africa's mosquito population without failing.

I should look this stuff up again, though.

If later our regrets are at a minimum, than good for us, and if not, at least we'll die trying. Isn't that better than letting another cople miliion people die just because we're afraid of taking a minor risk?

If you erradicate malaria, the people who live their are probably gonna end up creating a new worse disease by just existing.
