Why Kids Are Confronting Their Parents About 'Sharenting' | NYT Opinion

  • Published: 07 August 2019
  • While we often hear parents caution their children about safety, this time the tables are turned. In the video op-ed above, three children confront their mothers about “sharenting.” They are members of the first generation whose entire life could be documented on social media. It’s a generation that’s digitally savvy and concerned about what parents post online.

The U.S. law meant to protect kids online (COPPA) “places parents in control over what information is collected from their young children online.” But innocent posts from parents can carry unintended consequences. Studies estimate that by 2030, “sharenting” will play a role in two-thirds of identity fraud cases facing the young generation. Parents also risk unwittingly exposing their children to data broker profiling, hacking, facial recognition tracking, pedophilia and other threats to privacy and security.

I get it, but also as an almost 50 year old woman with no kids of her own, I really love seeing friends post photos of their kids-- so much joy, vibrance, zaniness, development...it's a delight.

This was an interesting video. I initially thought “sharenting” was when children have to help raise their siblings (especially in larger families)

from a family-driven perspective, I see nothing wrong to share with other family members. Unless the perspective is all about individualism.

Parents: Kids these days are online too much.

Also parents: If it’s not on insta, it didn’t happen.

Some parents are selfish and don’t seem to think about their kids as people.

Yeah, I’m talking about you, dad.

My mom definitely posts more than I’d like, but she’d never post anything personal or a photo that I asked not to be posted. If I asked her to take down a photo of me, she would without question. These parents are very inconsiderate and have a selfish outlook towards their kids. Living vicariously through kids never goes well.

But also to me it's like in a few years no one will remember and eventually maybe one day data will eventually be unreadable to future machines like how no one can retrieve some data from machines from the 1900s.

People have called me crazy in the past for not posting photos and info about my kids online. When Facebook first came out I decided it was not my place to create a digital footprint for my kids. Best decision ever. So, it is not “should I post this photo of my kids?” It is “I never post photos of my kids” - sure has made my life a whole lot easier.
