CinemaSins is generally too negative for me. I don't know why people think that just because both channels review movies, they're all that similar.

I thought the john wayne gacy killer clown moniker was the reason clowns became regarded as a terrifying movie monster?

I grew up in the 70's and I don't recall if I even ever saw that show (probably did, just didn't make an impression) though I know the phrase "john boy".

Richard Thomas became a household name as "John Boy" because of "The Waltons". He really didn't do a whole lot of note after that. So, those who remember him always identify with him as "John Boy". I don't think they could remember his real name.

The thing about not adapting Steven King... it's a bit unfair. This is long before the LotR trilogy making it acceptable to tell a single story over multiple movies. All we got back then was sequels to a self contained story that sort of made them trilogies (Star Wars, Back to the Future). And if they did make a single movie, well, a lot of stuff would need to be chopped, which you can't really do well with a lot of long books. No, the mini-series were the best you could hope to get. Essentially, they were what the streaming service shows like Stranger Things, The Boys, and GoT are today. Right down to being the focus of entertainment media and office water cooler talk.

And while some of them were pretty crappy (hiya, Langoliers), The Stand remains one of the better King to screen adaptations. Obviously, not up there with the best (Misery, the movie version of The Shining, etc), but miles ahead of a lot of the rest of the catalogue.

At lot of us growing up in the 70's and 80's weren't fans, yet John Boy was an iconic cultural character that EVERYONE knew. Hell, it was parodied on Carol Burnett, with her playing John Girl. There was hardly a group sleepover in which at the end of the night in the dark somebody didn't quip ''Goodnight John Boy'. I watched the 'It' miniseries when it was first broadcast and my reaction to seeing the leads was, "Hey, there's Jack (from Three's Company), Harry (from Night Court) and John Boy (also Venus from WKRP, much more culturally recognizable than Sister, Sister - but that's another beef). The guys are saying, that John Boy and the Waltons were clear back in the 70's, but that was only 15 years earlier from when 'It' first aired. There is definitely some ageism here. I enjoy Honest Trailers even though I don't necessarily get every pop culture joke that is aimed at Millennials or younger. They shouldn't be paranoid to include pop culture jokes from before the 90's. Me thinks that the Honest Trailers team needs some additional Gen X'ers working with them to whip these young'ins into line.

                                                                              • Jerry Booth

I think, like a lot of stuff online, they assume they are catering to people from about 18-34 and that makes them feel cool. When they realize that isn't the case, they are shaken up because the general idea is this is the only age group worth paying attention to. This isn't new for Honest Trailers - years ago their trailer for the last Indiana Jones movie took cheap, ageist shots at Karen Allen and some fans weren't thrilled - but it fits the worldview of what they think their fanbase is, and probably what they themselves feel. So it's going to continue.
