Hey all, a few people have had some questions about the break-down of costs for a ATP License at the beginning of this video so I thought I’d try to clear things up and show a few sources for the different components.

College Cost: I misplaced the original source that lines up exactly with $133k but this statistic is about the same accounting for yearly growth.
    https://www.statista.com/statistics/238112/university-attendance-costs-in-the-united-states/

Private Pilots License: I said $8,000 in the video based off a source’s estimate. Looking at a random selection of flight schools’ estimates it could be even a little higher. Many have also pointed out that the vast majority of individuals can only apply with 40 hours flight time (a small minority of US pilots are trained under Title 14 of federal code part 141 which allow them to apply with 35 hours.) While I was choosing to use the lowest numbers for training as to not sensationalize the cost numbers (it’s sensational enough as it is) I probably should have done the math for 40 hours (maybe even more as many need more hours to gain the skills needed) to get a more average estimate.
    $9,950: https://www.illinoisaviation.com/flight-training/private-pilot-141/
    $8,123: http://www.stcharlesflyingservice.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/02/CostEstimateToAdvance.pdf
    $7944: http://www.flyhafc.com
    $9500: https://www.executiveflighttraining.com/Private_Pilot_License.html

Instrument Rating: The way I presented this bit was definitely confusing. The $900 I mentioned was accounting for the ground training and then I wrapped the hours needed for an instrument rating into the additional hours needed for a commercial pilots license (215/210.)

Commercial Pilots License: From the comments I’ve read nobody really disagrees with the estimate I put for the overall CPL cost but here’s the source I used anyways.

🔴 I heard many pilots who first start off are relying on Food Stamps to survive and in some countries who send student pilots here to America, force those pilots on Lifetime Contracts with tiny salaries for the first couple of years and flying with them are of course An Endangerment of Your Own Lives

@r3poman671 MUCH more accurate, well done. And of course everyone has different rates of learning, whether in the airplane or the books. In my case, the instrument, commercial, and multi add-on was about $50K all together. It also depends upon where you are in the country.

Such a stupid ending. You absolutely DO NOT need math and physics schooling to be a pilot. Nice sales pitch, lol

          It’s not a job.
          It’s a passion.
Pilots don’t care if they earn 350$ a year or half a million $
IT’S A GOD DAMN PASSION, NOT A JOB. Pilots are just happy they get a salary for something they like to do.

What about not just favoring people who go through the university system but assume the full costs of whatever the training is to fly? I mean if my pilot doesn't have a bachelor's degree am I in serious danger? Legit question, might sound dumb idk.

America is a society of debt, want a new car? Pay 40k+ over 8 years or give into advertising and ""trade"" for a new car and amount more debt for the newer car.
Atleast you can save up money and buy new parts, oh wait you can't due that because insurance is mandatory and good driver discounts don't make up for how much you would save if you just saved the money.

Want better pay? Get indebted in college.
Want to work a Trade job? Get underbidded by bigger companies and corporations with better advertising.
Want to buy a house? Be indebted, and then pay property tax.
Want to sell what you build and make? Pay taxes on that.

But it's okay, in states like Oklahoma with terrible roads you can enjoy... nothing. No public transport, rarely any scholarships, no good state jobs like teaching, or anything else.

to me the solution seems simple, its the massive upfront cost of becoming a pilot in the first place thats discouraging people, airlines should be subsidizing promising students to encourage more people to become pilots

30 years from now there will be an ex-military non-com at a major airport flying a console monitoring 4 jets at one time, maintenance will drop it on the taxiway disconnect, push an FMS interlink button on the nose gear with a timer to get out of the way and it will depart with sensors in the runway. After rotation the non-com who the military trained for free will assume control after gear/flaps up and put the craft on autopilot to a cat 3C landing. It might happen in 20 years with cargo airlines. Piloting is a job that will disappear within 50 years.

Airliners in the West treat pilots as if they were a disposable resource. There is always the saying; "If you are not willing to fly for peanuts, we can find some other pilot who will". That is why a lot of pilots eventually quit and start working as a manager for some ground-based business, where they make significantly MORE money.

It appears that management has taken your suggestions on how to make the business better for all. I would like to point out that having your wings with 1,500 hours is a far better job than standing on your feet all day bagging hamburgers. To compare FO salary to Fast Food workers is a stone thrown too far. This is the same reason that not enough people are opting to become aircraft technicians today. The airline industry has historically paid substandard wages for a job that has tons of responsibility. In the US an aircraft technician has to sign off on each and every job that he or she preforms on a certified aircraft. It is one of the few jobs that if you screw up while doing your job you can be charged with criminal negligence. I am now retired but worked in the aircraft industry for 40 years, I have worked for airlines, corporate aviation as well as general aviation. Looking back on when I decided to get involved with aviation I now know that it was a major mistake. I should have become a diesel engine or a marine mechanic and would have earned substantially more with zero personal liability. I do not feel any sympathy for the aviation companies. They need to get real and at least increase their entry level pay scale by at least 2 or 3 times what they currently pay. Here is a novel idea, they need to establish a serious apprentice training program where a young person is trained by the company who needs pilots so that the young person does not have to pay for all of the fight time.

Became a flight instructor and flown a Medevac PC12 for a while before i got into a regional airline base in Toronto, Canada. Flying a Dash 8 Q400 making about $44000 and still with $30000 in debt. Luckily in Canada to fly right seat in a commercial airliner we don't need ATP yet(US had this a while ago). However, in order to get into bigger airline I need to get more hour before i can move on. Most people think airline pilots making 6 figures...until i show them my paycheck LOL

I appealed through NASA with 2 cardiologist from John Hopkins which both said the blip that the MD detected could have been from the coffee I had or even eating a chocolate bar, but it was in no way a medical condition. 6 months of fighting and the FAA said tough shit it was an FAA certified MD who made the diagnosis and you will not get you're cert back. That was 25 years ago and it broke my heart, I have never flown again. I went back to school to learn software Engineering. Fuck the FAA!!! An airline could've paid me in peanuts and I still would've flown for them.

The same thing happened in the trucking industry < and now they have wrecks all the time ,but it doesn't hit the news like planes !! but its coming !!! when they got too short of drivers then they started hiring from the unemployed and paid them nothing so they could still charge the same for the freight THE NEXT PILOTS will be Ex-Auto Zone managers, paid even less than what's paid now !! same goes for the maintenance crews !!
