More storytellers like John please! Cannonball Run was the movie of my youth when I even had a couple Countach posters on my bedroom wall!

You need to talk to the founder/principal of Sim City, Will Wright, he ran in '79 or '80, and has some good stories, he also ran in SCCA Pro-Rally a bit.

Um, seriously? What the hell was interesting about that story? Honestly, I'm not dogging the guy he seems like a good dude but seriously, I have much, much more exciting road trip stories with my PARENTS than this. Short one, my folks had a 2002 M5, 4.4, 6 speed, black on black, badass car. Im the driver in my family, ive been kart racing all my life, drifting, autocross, you name it. My dad does too but he has a issue falling asleep and it scares the shit outta my mom so she only trusts me behind the wheel since I was 14. I'm 15 years old driving my dad's really expensive BMW (expensive at the time I'm 32 now). Well they both fell asleep and stupid 15 year old me decides, let's see what she'll do. Anyone who knows beemers knows they're all limited to 155mph. Well my dad being a gear head, it had the pathetic excuse of that time's OBD2 programmer. So it did not have a governor. I'm cookin, rpms in 6th at 155 were at 4800 and I'm right around 5500-5600 rpm so I'm guessing, 165-170. With both of my parents still sleeping. Keep in mind I'm 15, no license but I did have a permit. Guess what, I flew by a California highway patrol. He turns on the red & blues and he's coming after me. I never looked back never took my foot off the floor, I ran from him and I swear on my mom's eternal soul got away with my folks still sleeping. They never woke up and I never said a word until about 3 years ago. My dad was talking about the only time he ran from the police on his old Elsinore 125 back in the 70s and I looked at him and said, "dad, I love you but you've been in another high speed pursuit and you were sleeping the whole time."

I always wanted to do something like the Cannonball with street legal dirt bikes. It wouldn't even be close to the speeds of the cars, but you could lose the cops by going off road….

What in the fuck was the point of this stupid ass story what happened to the crash it sounded like it happened during the race but all this is just a story of how these dumb asses spent too much money and time traveling to a race that they never made it too due to bad driving

I remember that movie and I always wanted to do that. I have never driven coast to coast but I have driven some really long distances straight through. Los Angeles to Central Iowa, Central Iowa to Salem Oregon, Phoenix AZ to Tacoma WA, Tacoma to Iowa, Phoenix to Tampa then Tampa to Phoenix a year later, Iowa to Tampa, Cent Iowa to Portland Indiana, Houston to Iowa and back again (Seperate trip) Most all of these trips were driving straight through without sleep, stopping only for fuel for vehicle and myself, no breakdowns, no flats and only ONE ticket for seatbelt in Illinois. Most of these trips were in the 24-36 hr range. With a 4 hr cat nap a couple times I could kill it in a sea to sea romp.

One of my very good friends and I came very, very close to playing Dean Martin and Sammy Davis Jr with a red 308 for Halloween. We’re both pretty big guys. He’s a big black dude with long dreads and I’m about 6’5” and we were gonna get the priest suits, the rosaries, big stupid jewelry, the cocktail glasses(with sweet tea), and of course both of us are total cut ups. It would have been MAGIC!!!!! The owner of the red Magnum PI car told us it wouldn’t idle in traffic without overheating and he knew we’d be doing a lot of cruising and getting out and insulting each other and acting wasted. We were even gonna step it up a notch with doing “blow” off the hood and “blessing” every buxom babe we could find!! The show ain’t over though. Charleston, SC is a crazy town and we still might just do it the next Halloween on a Saturday. Now if we could get two friends to follow us in a hot rodded ambulance, that would be epic!

Kamil Karquat this guy was accepted by Brock Yates himself, to be in the cannonball. He was there for a totally AMERICAN phenomenon that generations of rebels have DREAMED of being part of. Don't be so critical. It was a time when there was allot less hate rampant in the world.

Or at least it seems so to me now, as I look back from a time where now, its vogue to trash talk the POTUS by all the mainstream media, not just the pundits, and I dont remember any school shootings back then and there were pick ups IN THE HS PARKING LOT with guns hanging in the rear windows!!

This trip, back in time, is a wonderful escape from today. Don't be so critical man. Go rent Cannonball. It's a wonderful distraction.

I was ten years old but started reading C/D in '72 as my Aunt gave me her subscription -- it was too enthusiast based for her. I loved C/D for the next 15 years. I've actually been published in it but it was recently just some spy photos of a Kia 900.
