Reply to: Kurzgesgat - In a Nutshell

      - Replace all welfare programs (except for workforce retraining programs), agriculture subsidies, art subsidies, and reproductive policy subsidies with the UBI set at $1,200 per month for everyone 18 and older ($600 per month for all part-time workers 14 - 17 years)
      - Nationalize all private health insurance and combine all funding for all public programs into a single-payer system
      - Nationalize the entire gambling industry and utilize all profits to assist in paying for all college tuition fees and create a program where people work for 20 hours per week to help with a student loan forgiveness plan
      - Implement the Green New Deal to create 25 million green jobs with a minimum wage of $15 per hour and enable de-industrialization through automation
      - Invest in the creation of a permanent American base on the moon and research on Nuclear fusion technology
      - Legalize cannabis, industrial hemp, & prostitution and redivert private investments to long-term sustainable industrial and agricultural resources (i.e. vegan industry and insect agriculture)
      - Allow the midwest US to be colonized by the lower classes and expand the internal economy while raising these people up to the Middle Class
      - Simplify the Tax system by creating a 15% VAT on luxury items such as yachts, private jets, processed meat, alcohol, tobacco, and cannabis; Place an additional 7.5% "Sin Tax" on Tobacco, Alcohol, Prostitution, and Gambling; Introduce a 2.5% Wealth Tax; Introduce a 7.5%, 15%, and 30% Personal Progressive Income Tax, and a 10% Flat Business Profit Tax; Eliminate all other taxes
      - Establish the internet as a public, taxpayer-funded utility

      - Cut Defense spending by 50%
      - Enable enough immigrants to come to the US to increase the potential workforce by 2.5%
      - Abolish all Tariffs and increase US trade between Europe, Latin America, and East Asia
      - Divert all energy subsidies to an "All-of-the-above" renewable energy policy
      - Federalize garbage pick-up and require recycling
      - Try to get bond-holders for the US national debt to forgive as much as possible and focus a minimum of 5% of federal income to be dedicated to paying off the national debt
      - Reinstate the Glass-Stegall Act
      - Pass federal legislation that combines Right-to-Work with Wage Transparency & Equal pay for Equal work and require affirmative action
      - Wait until it is possible to colonize or set up a presence on Mars and then let the polluters go crazy on Mars

Unless you raise taxes to a ridiculous amount UBI is not feasible. There are about 300 million Americans 18 and up. Multiply that by 1,000 (UBI) and that's 300billion dollars a month! Multiply that by 12 and now thats 3.6 trillion! That's pretty dang close to what the government collects in its entire revenue yearly. That would leave no money for any other program.

Even if you only gave that money to the poor which is around 43 million Americans, that would still cost 500 billion dollars a year. A little more reasonable but still a quite expensive price tag for a government with an already enormous amount of debt.

Side note. The US government pays around 470 billion dollars a year in interest on the national debt alone! And it's the fastest growing price tag on the budget. That's insane! If we dont turn that around we are bound to one day fault on our loans and enter an economic catastrophe.

              Or instead we can have:
              - laws that provide and protect affordable housing
              - laws that provide working conditions and protections as being decently paid, have paid parental leave of a minimum of 9 months for both parents of any child born or adopted, and others
              - a free health system for all focus on prevention not just for physical problems but also for psychological
              - free education system base on merit since daycare to university that promotes social mobility
              - laws that combat inflation

The fact that it always allows work/effort to directly improve one's financial situation is beautiful!
I also think, that UBIs are unavoidable with proceeding technological advance: Many will then work in the service sector, but jobs are limited there by the number of people being wealthy enough to consume. UBIs would probably strengthen the service sector, potentially even create a positive feedback loop.
Rich people cannot carry a product- and service-focused economy by themselfes (without aggressively overconsuming) - without an UBI future economies could face rapid crashes and civil unrest. Another reason why increasing taxes for the few percent holding the majority of civil capital in a country might benefit everybody (even those taxed more).

From personal experience: I'm german and currently finishing my masters degree at university. I work on sundays to earn money, but without the support of my parents going to university would be extremely hard (aside from the studies themselves) - so I'm extremely lucky.
Student loans however are only given to few students depending on how much their parents earn (ignorant of their relation to them, or if those parents could actually afford to support their child in another city): Some students cannot go to universities of their choice (or fully focus on their studies), as they don't get the loan but their parents can only support them partly should they leave the house. UBIs would drastically change the this situation for many students: many wouldn't need to work on weekends/after their lectures and could instead focus on their subjects.

Terrible idea. In some countries this is already done in part especially in some Caribbean islands where housing and food is given out. What this produces is that people work 2 days a week and they don't care if they get fired. Told by a boss I had which is a global service delivery manager, that it was insane to keep people coming to work and finally the business had to leave the country because it just wasn't worth the hassle.

I can hear the Marxism screaming at me. It's so apparently obvious. The idea that people will continue working because they actually want to. You give someone a little bit of money to help them pay rent every month and then you say, "see they didn't stop working; if we keep going further with this program, no one will stop working". That's not enough money to subsist off of. No one would stop working as a result of this money. But, we know that free stuff is very appealing to the populous and that if someone wants to become powerful, they just have to offer more UBI to everyone. "It will only cost a little bit more in taxes and the possibility of new industries being made."

And people seem to under estimate the drive the people have to do something (work or what not). Yes some might be okay on just laying around doing nothing. But the majority is not like that.
Also, no studies done to this but personal experience says the day you get your check/payday you just wake up different more positive, suddenly work is not that bad knowing there’s something waiting for you when you open your bank account....until it’s time to pay your bills and your back to micro managing your days so you can survive until the next paycheck. With the UBI, I believe it will take that dread out of the equation. Yes you might spend most, if not all, of your paycheck in a couple weeks, it’s up to you, but point is, you won’t have to worry about having a roof and bed to sleep on because you have extra money to keep you from being homeless.

3:00 That is me right now. I go to college as a 22 year old male. The government covers 100% of my costs so I have no debt and almost out of school, I have 1 more year. I get this money because my family doesn't make enough and I qualify for benefits. Well my dad just got a raise, this not only reduced my granted money, but I completely lost it entirely. In fact I didn't get a job purely so that I could receive these benefits. If I had gotten a job I would not be able to pay for college and be in major debt and I also would not get benefits. So I got more by doing nothing. Now this is gone so yes I got a job at an Amazon fulfillment center. I don't not want a job I just don't want a bunch of debt, but current well fair systems force me to either have no job and live on a small amount of money, or go into debt and live with a small amount of money. Clearly no debt is a better option especially if it means I have more free time.

Like I said this is no longer the case and now I have a job. I actually can't pay for college this semester and dropped out for 1 semester to build some money. I actually got fined $800 for dropping out. So now that is added to my debt.

A UBI would 100% without a doubt not pay for my college, I am aware, but it would not be taken away by having a job. So if I had that money now I actually would have been able to take classes this semester and I would have a job, making me have the ability to create a savings account and actually have some extra money.

A UBI will not help me as it is too late for me to really bennifit the most I can, but it will help all future students in my situation so I am 100% in. In fact this would increase the pay for some people I know that work very hard by 30%. They make 35K a year. 12k a year is life changing. Granted a lot of their money goes to alcohol, but that is another issue this country needs to solve.

People said it failed because people starting to work less, but they started to work less because they were spending more time with their families and pursuing their hobbies and interests

Michael Scott Except that the Alaskan Permanent Fund is not UBI. Simply reading up on any of that state’s legislation’s history will prove very quickly that it is not UBI.

Alaska has lots of oil, but lots of people own several parts of the land there. Rather than going through the effort of individually paying everyone for the drilling rights, the oil industries just made a statewide fund to gain statewide drilling rights. An Alaskan citizen only receives about $1,500 each year (which will maybe pay for a cable or gas bill), so the individuals with oil on their land really got screwed over because they’d be receiving a lot more than that from the oil industries otherwise. The price fluctuates somewhat too, because it’s tied to the price of oil, for some reason. It saved the oil industries money though, because they don’t have to make the people millionaires to drill there and saved a lot of time doing so too.

Their being able to now drill is what caused more business in Alaska and thus caused a mild increase in part time employment (that could be part time working oil drilling machinery or that could mean part time working a hotel to house the oil workers). Like I said earlier though, it’s a shitty trade off for people with oil on their land, because they’ll only get a crappy annual check of $1,500 instead of how much that oil is really worth.
