I believe a more relevant test for refresh rates is the traceability of targets. Perhaps the percentage of frames that a test subject can accurately stay aimed at a target moving around the screen would provide better results.

For competitive game playing coming from a 60hz monitor which monitor hz is more beneficial for a 27inch or 32inch monitor is 144hz or 165hz or 240hz. If 165hz is higher than 144hz is 240hz even worth getting?

I still say it's totally unnecessary unless you're pro gaming or money isn't an issue. I see people all the time saving for ages to get a 144 or 240 Hz monitor. Then we play together, and it really makes no meaningful difference. I run a 4k 60Hz, mostly because it's what I could afford. I don't game too competitively, so 20-50ms isn't worth the huge premium you pay for high refresh rates right now. If it was cheaper, or I had the money, yeah, I'd have a faster screen. I won't try to say it doesn't look better. That being said though, 60Hz looks just fine.

Brilliant video. Bravo!!!!! I would be interested to know though, that if after this great experiment, what refresh would you drop your cash on?

A super dorky, nerdy experiment like this is what YouTube is totally made for. I want that extremely fast camera or its latest version (for free). Ideally, the experiment should have been more complex. I think the experiment should have tested out various games in multiplayer mode: first-person shooter, racing game, fighting game, real-time strategy game, MOBA, etc. Use 3 refresh rates: 60 Hz vs 120 Hz vs 240 Hz. Create a LAN with 1 vs 1, 2 vs 2, and/or 4 vs 4 of the same exact persons. Play each game per person for at least 100 hours, because developing the skill to take full advantage of higher refresh rates might matter significantly. Then compare scores over time and average scores in regard to individual changes and team changes.

This video: Data shows that the blinded test only performed marginally better.

Also this video: But the not blind data (therefore invalid) showed significant improvement for performance... conclusion this is a proven effect.

This is a lack of understanding of the scientific method, that I'm astonished. If you wanna really test this... and it's very simple. Create a program that will pop a circle moving on a screen... and time how long for the person to react and click the ball. The program will track mouse movement and timing, no need for a high speed camera. Also the program will randomly change between 60 Hz, 120 Hz and 240 Hz, without the test subject or the person applying the test knowing which is which, (this is called double blind, contrary to simple blind, as this video, and if you wanna you can triple blind, with the person analyzing the data also not knowing which frequency is which when saying what were the best and worse results).

It would be much simpler than the setup you did... and the program and very simple to code... I could do it, I just don't have a 240 Hz monitor.

One last thing... in these kind of tests, we usually have the subjects repeat the task dozens of times. And eliminate the top and bottom results, because they can be outliers. In this case... a person by chance getting a head shot, or my mistake taking too long to react one time. These random chances events don't actually have anything to do with the test... and can bias the results.

And I know... actually providing good answers for the question of the title doesn't make it for a "good video", while a slow mo video that doesn't answer the question does.

I don't think you need a high frame camera for this. Program a simple setup where a ball enters the screen. Log mouse movement start difference to ball enter, average mouse proximity to ball till hit or fail, clicks proximity to the ball, time until ball hit etc. Take 10 subjects, 20 rounds with pause between. Change Hz randomly. Compare averages with t-test or anova for three Hz comparison. If it is significant you have proof. Not so fancy as a high speed camera, but should work.

I went from a 60hz to a 144hz at 1440p, then a year later got a 240hz 1080p. The change from 60hz to 144hz was insane and It did improve my gameplay some because I was able to track targets better. It was clearly noticeable and a huge change. When I switched to a 240hz it didn’t feel like a big leap from the 144hz and I really couldn’t notice a difference even immediately upon switching. It wasn’t until after using my 240hz consistently for about a month that I noticed it and my screen felt choppier when I dropped below 200fps during a multiplayer game and now I can’t go back to 144hz for shooting multiplayer games. If I could only afford a 144hz 1440p monitor or a 240hz 1080p monito I would choose the 144hz 1440p all day. The 240hz is nice but if you are at 60hz now and want a monitor I’d recommend the higher resolution 144hz because the jump from 144hz to 240hz isn’t that noticeable and It’s hard to get over 240fps I’m most games even with a high end pc build. It’s great for games like overwatch, CS go, etc but a 2k monitor is a better all around Monitor if you play games that aren’t just multiplayer.
